Can You Cancel GamStop Early? How Removing Your Self-Exclusion Works
GamStop will not end a self-exclusion before its minimum period is over, and it does not end on its own afterwards either. How long it lasts, how removal works, the 24-hour cooling-off period and what to put in place first.

Can you cancel GamStop early? No. GamStop says it cannot remove anyone's exclusion before the minimum period you chose is over, so that it can offer the best possible protection to vulnerable people. What surprises many people is the other half: when that period ends, your exclusion does not end with it. Here is how long GamStop lasts, what happens at the end, and how removal works if you decide to go ahead.
How long does a GamStop exclusion last?
When you register, you choose a minimum exclusion period of six months, one year or five years, or five years with auto renewal. You can see your start date and your minimum period at any time in your Gamstop Online account.
With auto renewal, a new five-year minimum period starts immediately after the current one expires. That repeats for up to four more five-year periods, unless you turn auto renewal off in your account, and you can only do that during the last six months of a five-year period.
What happens when your minimum period ends?
Nothing happens automatically. GamStop will not contact you when your minimum period expires, and your exclusion is not removed. If you do not contact GamStop to remove it, it stays in place for a further seven years. That is deliberate: the end of a minimum period is a date, not a decision, and removal only happens when you actively ask for it.
How to remove GamStop after your exclusion has expired
- Sign in to your Gamstop Online account and check that your minimum exclusion period has expired. If you cannot get into your account, contact GamStop.
- If it has expired, click "Request Removal" and complete the removal by online chat or by phone. The phone number is free: 0800 138 6518.
- GamStop says the removal process should not take long, but that it matters to make sure you are comfortable with your decision.
- Do not contact GamStop before your minimum period has expired: it will not remove an exclusion early.
The 24-hour cooling-off period
Once the removal process is complete, a 24-hour cooling-off period begins. During those 24 hours you can change your mind and cancel the removal request in your online account. If an urge to gamble is what made you start the removal, those 24 hours are the moment to use: step away, talk to someone, and cancel if it no longer feels right.
What GamStop covers, and what it never covered
GamStop is for online gambling. Its terms say it can only exclude you from gambling services offered by the operators that take part in it, and that it cannot help prevent you from using services run by organisations that do not. For betting shops, arcades and other venues, the Gambling Commission points to separate multi-operator self-exclusion schemes, where one request covers the same type of venue in your area.
That matters for the decision in front of you. Removing GamStop reopens the operators that take part in it. The sites outside it were never blocked by GamStop in the first place, and they are the ones our guide on non-GamStop casinos is about.
Before you remove it
Removing your exclusion is your decision. It still helps to decide first which protections you want to keep, so that GamStop is not the only thing between you and a bet:
- Keep a blocker on every device you use. BetClear blocks gambling websites with encrypted DNS on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows 11, using a list of more than 500,000 gambling sites that updates automatically, including sites outside GamStop. No blocker is perfect, because new sites appear all the time. If one gets through, you can report it.
- Ask your bank to block payments to gambling. The NHS lists asking your bank to block money going to gambling websites and apps as one of the things you can do.
- Decide in advance what you will do if gambling starts to feel hard to manage again, and tell someone you trust.
- Talk it through first. The National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare, is free on 0808 8020 133, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In England you can also self-refer to an NHS gambling treatment clinic, or ask a GP about services near you.
If you are reading this in the middle of an urge, you do not need to decide anything today. Your exclusion is still doing its job, and nothing changes until you ask for it to.
