Short answer

  • Block at the system level, not in one browser, so Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox are all covered.
  • Mac: install a configuration profile. Windows 11: enter the DNS address and encrypted-connection template in network settings.
  • Windows 10 has no dependable built-in encrypted DNS, so a system-level block isn't possible on it.
  • Check Firefox and every network connection (Wi-Fi and Ethernet), because both can quietly bypass the setting.

Why a Chrome extension isn't enough

A browser extension blocks sites in one browser. Open Safari, Edge or a private window with extensions disabled and the block is gone. On a work-from-home laptop, you also have every betting app's web version one tab away.

A system-level DNS block applies to the whole computer instead: every browser, every app, every tab.

How to block gambling sites on a Mac

macOS can apply encrypted DNS from a configuration profile, the same mechanism used on iPhone.

  • Install the blocker's profile, then approve it in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Profiles.
  • Open a betting site in Safari and in Chrome to confirm it doesn't load.
  • Firefox uses its own DNS over HTTPS by default and can skip the system setting. Turn that off, or use a blocker that tells Firefox to defer to the system resolver.

How to block gambling sites on Windows 11

Windows 11 has encrypted DNS built in. Point it at a filtering server once and every browser on that connection follows.

  • Open Settings > Network & internet, then choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet and open the connection's properties.
  • Under DNS server assignment choose Edit > Manual, turn on IPv4, and enter the resolver address with 'On (manual template)' for encryption.
  • Leave the alternate DNS field empty. A second address lets Windows fall back to an unfiltered server.
  • Repeat for each connection. Windows stores these settings per connection, so Wi-Fi and Ethernet need doing separately.

Make it harder to undo

Anyone with admin rights can change DNS in a few clicks. Use a standard user account for daily use and give the admin password to someone you trust, or at least change it to something you won't remember in the moment.

Pair the computer block with your phone block and your bank's gambling block, so closing off one door doesn't just move the bet somewhere else.

Frequently asked questions

How do I block gambling sites on my laptop?
Use a system-level encrypted DNS block instead of a browser extension. On a Mac install a configuration profile; on Windows 11 enter the DNS address and encrypted template in your network connection settings.
Does blocking gambling on Chrome also block it in Edge or Firefox?
Only if the block is at the system level. Chrome extensions and settings affect Chrome alone. System DNS applies to every browser, though Firefox needs its own DNS over HTTPS setting checked.
Does this work on Windows 10?
No. Windows 10 has no dependable built-in encrypted DNS, so there is no way to apply a per-account block at the system level. Use Windows 11, or block on the router as a partial fallback.
Why does a gambling site still load on my computer?
Usually a second network connection (Ethernet or a dock) still uses the default DNS, Firefox is using its own DNS over HTTPS, or a VPN is routing around the setting.
